23 Sep, 2007 - Philippines: The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), is investing as much as P4 billion to modernize its bank note printing system to prevent a repeat of the "Arrovo" bill mishap, Inquirer sources in the central bank said.

PHILIPPINES PNEW 100 PISO 2005 ERROR Name Spelled "ARROVO"

The Philippine central bank has issued 100-peso (about R11,88) bills with the surname of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo misspelled on 20 Nov 2005. Central bank deputy governor Amando Suratos junior assured the public that the banknotes with Arroyo's surname wrongly spelled as "Arrovo" were still legal tender. He declined to say how many of the 100-peso bills were released.

Suratos said the bills were printed abroad to ensure sufficient supply of 100-peso bills during the Christmas season. He added that the central bank's cash department has already withheld the release of the rest of the bills that misspelled the president's surname. - Sapa-dpa

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION received from Rene Garcia, Philippines:
Everybody here in Manila is looking for the note. The misspelled 100 Peso note was released to commercial banks last Nov. 10. The public first became aware of the error on Nov. 14 and on Nov. 16, the Central Bank issued a memorandum to all commercial banks to return the banknotes still in their possession. The prefix of the banknotes are AJ, AK, AL and AM. I think only a few thousand pieces were actually released to the public before somebody noticed the error. I think am lucky I was able to purchased one for 300 Pesos as the going rate now is between 500 - 1000 Pesos.

In keeping with Pick numbering for this issue we are assigning P193e to these two notes. Estimated catalog value is between $4 - $5 each in Uncirculated.
