02 Sep, 2007 - Papua New Guinea: Recently we posted information on the new Papua New Guinea 20 kina Note with a prefix of BP07 submitted by Thomas Krause. We now have a discussion concerning this prefix started by Kai. Here is what he states about the prefix: "Hi Richard, I read from your site that a new PNG 20 kina has been released with BP07 (2007) prefix. I have a feeling that this might not be correct. I then contacted Thomas Krause, and he redirected me to an Aussie dealer whom he bought the note from on eBay, and the seller listed the note as 2007 (BP07). My reason is as follows:   - The 20K BP prefix was first released with Kamit/Tosali signatures in 2006.   - Those that I have when I got them in 2006 have the prefix of BP01. BP is the initials of one of the 2 deputy governors of PNG. It’s good to have banknotes carries your initials, right?   - The first time PNG issued a 20 Kina was back in 2002 commemorating the bank’s 30th years anniv. This note has a difference signature from the BP note (i.e., Kamit/Tarata), and has a prefix of LK01 (LK is the initials of the current Governor).   - If mine’s BP01 is 2006, then it is most likely that BP07 also came from the same print runs of BP01. I can sure that my note BP01 is not 2001 print run.   - I know that most collector would argued that, like Australia, NZ, Vietnam and Romania, the first 2 digits represents the year of issue, but this is not the first time they have done this, like the previous 20K polymer as mention above (LK01).   - At the moment there might already have BP08, 09 and 10 out there in PNG circulating, but I can’t confirm this yet as I have not sighted any. I am hoping to get more details on this and if I can dig out more, I will let you know. Cheers, Kai" EDITOR'S NOTE: If anyone has any comments we would be happy to post them. It is only through discussion that we can obtain the facts. |
