28 Sep, 2007 - Nigeria: On 26 Sept we reported the Nigeria 6-Digit 20 Naira 2006 notes which were printed by the Nigeria Security Printing & Minting Plc. Now we are able to verify that they have also printed the 5 Naira 6-Digit, and might assume also a 10 Naira note. Compliments of Andrew Roberts. |

26 Sep, 2007 - Nigeria: The Nigeria 20N polymer 2006 notes issued in February 2007 were printed by two companies, and comes in two versions, 6 and 7 digits serial numbers. The 6 digits serial numbers were printed by the Nigerian Central Bank (Nigeria Security Printing & Minting Plc), thus making this the first polymer banknote printed in the African continent and the other 7 digits notes were printed by Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) at their plant in Shah Alam, Malaysia. It appears that the serial numbers on those notes printed by the Nigeria Central Bank is inferior to those printed in Malaysia. Compliments of Kai. An additional variety of the 6-digit notes has been provided in that some of the six digit notes printed at the Nigeria Security Printing & Minting Plc failed to have their final application of Polymer applied to them, thus we have a variety of "Glossy", and "Non-Glossy" notes being released. Examples shown below were provided by Thomas Krause. |

04 Mar, 2007 - Nigeria: The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, (NSCIA) headed by the Sultan of Sokoto has rejected the new naira notes which was launched last week by President Olusegun Obasanjo on the ground that the Arabic inscriptions on the naira notes were removed and replaced with the three major Nigerian languages; Hausa, Ibo and Yoruba. The council has therefore insisted that the Arabic inscriptions on the naira notes should be restored. 02 Mar, 2007 - Nigeria: The three languages now on the reverse of the banknotes are Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. Hausa is top left, written now in Latin script, and it is the same language figuring in Arabic script on the old nairas. It is spoken by some 20 million people in Northern Nigeria, where it is also official in some States. It is also a trade language spoken by another 25 million people in Nigeria but also in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana and Niger. Igbo (also known as Ibo) is bottom left. Spoken by some 20 million in South-West Nigeria, as official status in some States. Yoruba is on the right side. Again some 20 million speakers, and again an official language of some South-Western States, not the same as for Igbo. Together with English, Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba have recently been declared official languages of Nigeria. Compliments of Massimo Accordi. 01 Mar, 2007 - The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issues new notes and coins on February 28, 2007. The new currency includes N5, N10, N20, and N50 notes which are issued in regular paper notes except the N20 that is in polymer form. Compliments of Claudio Marana, and Cleo Phas. 23 Feb, 2007 - Nigeria: Previously we had reported from MRI information concerning the new Nigerian issues. The following comments have been provided by Massimo Accordi; "MRI has stated that the new Nigerian banknotes "will have their value expressed in Hausa, Ibo and Yoruba. The Arabic inscription will be eliminated". In fact, what appears now in Arabic SCRIPT on Nairas IS Hausa. Hausa is a Western African language which is used in a widespread area for communication between different peoples, but mainly Muslim ones. That's why it has been written traditionally with Arabic letters, although a Latin alphabet is also in use. To give you an example, the 1,000 Naira say in Arabic script "Naira Dbu", while in Arabic it is "Alf Naira". Which alphabets are going to be used on the new notes I don't know; theoretically, Ibo and Yoruba (languages of the Southern part of the country where Christians are the majority) should be written in Latin script, while Hausa (language of the North, mainly Muslim population) still in Arabic script. In 10 days' time we will know." 21 Feb, 2007 - Nigeria: The new notes of 5; 10; 20 and 50 naira due to be issued 28 February will have their value expressed in Hausa, Ibo and Yoruba. The Arabic inscription will be eliminated. Compliments of MRI Banker's Guide to Foreign Currency. |
