21 Jun, 2007 - Madagascar: Redemption suspended. Due to the fact that a large number of Malgache notes denominated in francs have been stolen in what seems to be an inside job, the Central Bank has suspended their redemption. It is not known whether their redemption will be reinstated. MRI Banker's Guide to Foreign Currency. |

06 May, 2007 - Madagascar: Withdrawal of notes. The notes of 10,000 (= 2,000 ariary) and 25,000 francs (= 5,000 ariary) are redeemable until 31 Dec 2009. Proper identification is required, and a 24 hours notice must be given for amounts over MGA10,000,000. Compliments of MRI Banker's Guide to Foreign Currency. |

05 Jan, 2007 - Madagascar: According to Owen W. Linzmayer, the difference between the new 5,000 Ariary 2006 and the P85, 2003 issue is the addition of a EURion constellation to the security features. A Eurion constellation is a pattern of five rings which are incorporated into the banknote's design which help software in digital copiers to identify a banknote. See attached Banque Central de Madegascar Communication. 28 Dec, 2006 - The Banque Centrale de Madegascar has released a new 5,000 Ariary banknote as of October 2006 similar to the P84 5,000 Ariary ND (2003). Based upon the images the only distintion between the two issues is that the new issue appears to lack the watermark. Perhaps one of our readers can verify this. An example of a P84 is shown above for reference. Compliments of Ryan Vuong. |

28 Dec, 2006 - Madagascar: In reference to the discussion on the Madagascar P75, and P76 signature varieties on 20 Dec, 2006, Ruben Garza has provided some additional observations concerning signatures on Madagascar's P76 through P79. "I hope that you receive this email in good spirits. I was reading your update about Madagascar P-75 with the signature varieties. I realized that P-76 is the same way - two signatures. I have three banknotes with the Prefix A that have the 1994 signature - A 15404080, A 15507221, A 22098830. The next Prefix A banknotes I have has the 1998 signature - A 76353961 as well as the Prefix C. I looked at P-78 - two signatures. I have one banknote in the Prefix A that has the 1994 signature - A 16128154. The next Prefix A banknotes - I have - have the 1998 signature - A 87964830, A 88677028 as well as the Prefix B. I looked at P-79 - I don't know. The lowest serial number I have for the Prefix A is A 88567147 and it has the 1998 signature. I don't know if this helps you out or not - but now it will be interesting to see if they will update the catalogue or not and if the 1994 signature will become more valuable or not." |

20 Dec, 2006 - Madagascar: On 19.9.1994 Madagascar issued a new 500 Franc banknotes, which is now listed in the SCWPM as P-75 under the 1994-95 ND Issues. It has been reported by Johanna Krause that the note also exists with the signature which appears on the 1998 Issues. (The two signatures appear above along with the P75 submitted.) In checking what notes we could we have found that the 1994 Signature appears on the Prefix A notes, with the 1998 Signature appears on the B, and C Prefix's. It is our suggestion that SCWPM should combine the two issues into a 1994-1998 Issues, and that notes with the 1994 signature be designated as P-75a, and those with the 1998 signature be designed as P-75b. The P-76 should also be investigated. If anyone has a Prefix A with the 1998 signature, or a Prefix B with 1994 signature as shown above, we would appreciate your letting us know with an image of the note. |

25 Nov, 2006 - Madagascar has issued new, improved notes of higher denominations, 2,000; 5,000 and 10,000 Ariary to help fight counterfeiting. The new notes have the addition of small circles. The 5,000 Ariary notes were issued this month. Compliments of MRI Banker's Guide to Foreign Currency. |

The SCWPM, VOL III, 11th Edition lists the P71 500 Ariary note as being similar to P67, but with a modified underprint. Since I do not have an example of the P67 to make a comparision of I realized that there was another difference shown in the catalog and that was of signature. There is no indication that the signature on the P71 did not appear on the P67 notes also, nor is there a signature chart in the catalog, but it is a start. Perhaps one of our readers can clarify. Nazir Rahemtulla has provided the following information on the signatures: Pick 67-70 have 2 horizontal serial numbers and what I call signature number 1. Pick 71-74 have the right serial number vertical and what I call signature number 2. This signature is what is shown on your site. Pick 68 and 69 (1000F and 5000F) come with signature 2 as well. It is possible that the other 2 denominations come with signature number 2 but I have never seen these nor I have seen any dealer offering such. |
