24 Oct, 2007 - Korea, South - Activists Kim Koo and Ahn Chang-ho, who led the independence movement under the Japanese colonial rule, female artist Sinsaimdang, and scientist Jang Young-sil, have been selected as the final candidates to be featured on Korea’s 50,000-won or 100,000-won banknotes scheduled to debut in early 2009, according to sources.

29 Sep, 2007 - The Central Bank of South Korea plans to issue a new 100,000 won banknote in 2009 to reduce the inconvenience in financial dealings and cost of circulating single-use cashier's checks, which are widely used for larger transactions. The country's highest denomination 10,000 won bill was introduced in 1973.

08 Aug, 2007 - South Korea: Will a woman finally be seen on a Korean banknote? The Bank of Korea on Tuesday released the names of 10 candidates who could be depicted on the new W100,000 and W50,000 bills to be released in 2009. Two of the 10 are women.

02 May, 2007 - The Bank of Korea plans to issue 100,000-won (US$107.40) and 50,000-won bills in the first half of 2009. Currently, 10,000 won is the highest denomination of the country's currency in circulation, followed by 5,000 won and 1,000 won. Reference Yonhap News.

17 Jan, 2007 - The Bank of Korea said Tuesday that it will issue new W10,000 (US$1=W935) and W1,000 banknotes from Jan. 22, making them available at financial institutions as well as automatic teller machines. The new notes are smaller and brighter than their predecessors.
