27 Sep, 2007 - The Bank of Cape Verde will present the new 1,000-escudo bills on 25 September 2007 in Mindelo. The new bills will feature new security elements, as well as a portrait of writer Antonio Aurelio Goncalves. The 1,000-escudo bills currently in use will not be taken out of circulation. the stock [of 1,000-escudo banknotes], which has gradually been reduced over the years, and to incorporate the latest technological advances, in line with the issuance of the new family of banknotes begun in 1999." Fialho told news agency Inforpress protection systems based on the latest technological breakthroughs will be used in the production of the new bills in order to prevent forgery. The bills will be made with cotton paper containing invisible fibers that become fluorescent under ultraviolet light, and will have a water mark elaborated based on the portrait o Antonio Aurelio Goncalves, a major Cape Verdean cultural symbol. The front of the bill will also feature the face of the renowned professor and writer surrounded by a medallion made of dragon tree leaves. The back side of the bill will feature the landscape of Chanzinha, on the island of Sao Nicolau, including a dragon tree.
